Meet the Cartoonist - Dave Thompson
Cartoonist, David Thompson, graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1980 with a Bachelor's Degree in Commercial Graphics. During his senior year, Dave won a design contest for a 300 square foot mural that would adorn the college campus cafeteria - the Gorilla Grill. The winning design? It features cartoon jungle animals, of course. Right in the middle was a cartoon gorilla standing at a grill, flipping burgers. He was surrounded my lush, green vegetation and a lot of his animal friends coming to join him for lunch.
Dave's career as a professional cartoonist was off to a good start, but it took a lot of twists and turns during the past thirty years. He spent the first 15 years of his career working in various marketing management capacities, but even though he was wearing a shirt and tie, he didn't neglect his cartoon friends. One of the first cartoon projects was bringing a can of Real Kill insecticide to life, and cartooning a bunch of dead bugs for a company known then as Realex. Years later, Dave worked for a construction equipment company (then it was Target, today it is Husqvarna) and developed a friendly construction worker known as Fred Felker. Although the Felker division was eventually shut down, Fred lived on, working for a spin off company - DITEQ. Today, his name is Ed, and he is more than 20 years old.
In 1996, Dave decided to finally strike out on his own, and opened Thompson Advertising, Inc. Shortly after opening, Dave was invited to work on the M&M characters for Mars Candy. Dave learned from the best, working on the most widely recognized and successful brand mascots in history. Dave realized how powerful of a branding tool the M&M characters were, and started to look for a way to put similar tools in the hands of much smaller businesses. Toons4biz was born.
Today, small businesses can purchase well-crafted brand mascots, one image at a time, or in a robust clip art set that enables them to build a strong branding campaign around the mascot for a very low cost. For those who want to take the next step up, and have own the rights to their own brand mascot, Dave and his team of cartoonists, can design a character with exclusive rights. In addition to mascot design and clip art sets, Toons4biz also does custom animations. You may have seen some of our characters in TV commercials. The sky is the limit!
When you are developing your branding strategies, remember the power of brand mascots and give Dave a call.
